Govt to revise electricity master plan for 100 GW solar target

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is revising its national electricity master plan to accommodate a new target of 100 gigawatt-peak (GWp) in solar power capacity over two to three years, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced.

The proposed revision to the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) comes at the direct instruction of President Prabowo Subianto, representing a dramatic leap from the country's current trajectory—which had previously targeted 69.5 GW of total capacity additions by 2034.

"The RUPTL needs to be revised because the current requirement is only around 69.5 GW by 2034, whereas the President recently urged for the development of projects—specifically solar panels—totaling 100 gigawatt-peak," Airlangga stated here on Tuesday.

The rapid deployment of solar power and battery energy storage systems is regarded as a pivotal move to decarbonize the national energy sector.

Airlangga added that successful implementation could accelerate Indonesia’s net-zero emissions target by 10 to 15 years from the original 2060 goal.

To absorb and distribute the influx of renewable energy, the government plans to construct 47,758 kilometers of transmission lines integrated with smart grid technology.

Airlangga stressed that a stable and affordable clean energy supply is vital to support growing digital infrastructure, including data centers.

Alongside major grid expansion, the government is expanding its rural electrification program to broaden energy access across the archipelago. The target has been increased to 4,390 locations this year, up from 1,505 locations in 2025.

According to Airlangga, achieving these infrastructure milestones will push the national electrification rate above 99 percent and elevate Indonesia's energy resilience index to 7.13, reinforcing both energy security and sustainable economic growth.

"Energy remains the largest source of emissions. Therefore, the President is pushing for that 100-gigawatt program," Airlangga concluded.
