Najib’s bid to stay 15-year 1MDB sentence to be heard Oct 14

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak appeared in public today after being granted a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his SRC International prison sentence under house arrest.

Najib arrived from Kajang Prison at 8.30am wearing a light grey suit and white shirt, under tight prison department security, Harian Metro reported.

The High Court here is scheduled to hear his application to stay the execution of his 15-year prison sentence and RM11.38 billion fine in connection with the misappropriation of RM2.3 billion from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

According to a check of the judiciary’s website, the application will be heard before Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin.

The application was filed nine months after Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, now a Federal Court judge, delivered his decision on December 26 last year.

Najib’s appearance today comes after the Federal Territories Pardons Board’s decision was announced on September 18.

Najib is currently serving his sentence at Kajang Prison following a conditional pardon granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim on September 18, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence for the SRC International case under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to the conditions imposed, including payment of a RM50 million fine.

Meanwhile, media reports said no deadline had been set for Najib to pay the RM50 million fine, which is a condition for him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence at home.

Najib is seeking a stay of the 15-year prison sentence and RM11.38 billion fine imposed on him for four charges of abusing his position to obtain RM2.3 billion in 1MDB funds.

If he fails to pay the fine, the High Court ordered the former prime minister to serve an additional 10 years in prison for each charge.
