After 11 Years, The Witcher 3’s Best New Feature Is Worth The Wait

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered launches in a couple of days as an amuse-bouche for the Songs of the Past expansion that is scheduled to be released in 2027. Then, with The Witcher 4’s tentative 2028 release window on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to indulge in all that The Witcher has to offer, especially since a brand-new saga and a handful of games are in development.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is 11 years old now and, while it is deserving of every ounce of praise it received to this day, it has certainly aged. Thankfully, there will never be a better time to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its expansions if you haven’t already, as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered is brimming with accessibility options and thrilling upgrades that fans have cried out for.

The Witcher 3 Remaster’s New Feature Is A Godsend

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered’s myriad enhancements include:

  • Improved environment, NPC, and monster textures
  • Major enhancements to foliage
  • Reworked lighting, rendering, and ray tracing
  • Revamped animations
  • Brutal new finishers
  • An adaptive camera
  • An overhauled skill tree
  • Cross-platform mod support
  • Transmogrification
  • Realistic light and shadow
  • Immersive meditation
  • An expanded photo mode

But perhaps the single greatest miracle that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered is bestowing on players is the ability to ditch the inventory weight limit that has been a defining attribute of the game for more than a decade. Indeed, there will reportedly be a toggle for it, meaning players can retain it if they wish to preserve the vanilla game’s core design philosophy, or finally unshackle themselves from the penalization of hoarding or being encumbered.

Players have long been dabbling in mods in order to circumvent the inventory weight limit, and it’s highly likely that CD Projekt Red assessed what The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s most popular mods were when deciding what to let players add, remove, or tweak for the sake of modern accessibility. Otherwise, it’s always been in the best interest of players who haven’t embraced mods to prioritize acquiring saddlebags.

Of course, there are bound to be some players who choose not to disable their inventory weight limit in the remaster because they prefer a bit of friction in their RPGs. The choice between having and not having an inventory weight limit being the player’s to make is what’s paramount here, but it’ll also be interesting to see how this and every other Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered accessibility option affect one another. Effectively, the remaster could feel like playing a completely different game compared to the original experience of playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

This Bodes Well For The Witcher 4

One of the most exciting revelations that we can likely make from this choice for the remaster is that the same accessibility feature should logically be present in The Witcher 4 at launch. It wouldn’t make much sense for CD Projekt Red to acknowledge how much friction there is in-game and give players the option to be rid of it in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s upcoming remaster, only to then bake a divisive inventory weight limit into The Witcher 4 without the option to disable it.

Likewise, based purely on the cinematic trailer and Unreal Engine tech demo for The Witcher 4, we can expect the graphical leap between The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered and The Witcher 4 to be incredibly significant. This should be comparable to the jump between Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto 6—though The Witcher 4 will hopefully have better performance and not be stuck at 30 fps—or The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II. However, the sorts of strides being made in terms of gameplay are far more crucial, as they may define what the experience of playing a new Witcher game will be like for the foreseeable future.
