Harry Potter Has 2 More Years To Finally Fix The Weasley Family

HBO has continued its task of casting all the Weasleys for its upcoming Harry Potter TV show, but the job isn't done quite yet. The remake series is premiering its first season on December 25, 2026, which will cover the entirety of JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. This close to the big day, we've naturally received news regarding just about every character casting that is relevant for that first installment. In fact, we are even beginning to get news about the cast and characters of Harry Potter season 2, including Arthur Weasley.

HBO recently announced that the Weasley patriarch, whom Harry meets for the first time in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, will be played by actor Rafe Spall. He will be joining the already-cast Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, as well as Alastair Stout as Ron, Tristan Harland as Fred, Gabriel Harland as George, and Ruari Spooner as Percy. The part of Ginny Weasley was played by Gracie Cochrane in season 1, but she will be played by Bonnie Hill in season 2. Overall, this gang is shaping up nicely, but there are still two more core Weasleys to go.

We still need our Charlie and Bill. Harry meets both of these characters near the beginning of Goblet of Fire, and since Harry Potter season 2 casting is being announced around now, we can expect the same for season 4 casting sometime in 2028—not too far off. This is particularly exciting because neither Bill nor Charlie was introduced in the Goblet of Fire movie as they should have been. In fact, Charlie was never introduced in the films at all.

Harry Potter Really Can't Mess Up The Weasley Family Again

We can't be too hard on the Harry Potter movies, since their format meant that Warner Bros simply couldn't pack in all the characters and plot details it might have liked. The Weasleys play a key role throughout the films, but there simply wasn't enough time to give them all sufficient attention. It's for this reason that Bill Weasley, who had his own arc between Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows, only appeared last-minute in the film franchise. Then there is Charlie, the second Weasley child, who was nearly left out of the Harry Potter movies entirely.

Charlie exists in the Harry Potter movies. At least, he is mentioned. However, there was never a good enough reason to formally cast this character and include him in any key moments throughout the films. In truth, Charlie doesn't do a whole lot in the Harry Potter books either, so it's understandable that the movies wouldn't prioritize him. Still, as Ron's older brother and an official member of the Order of the Phoenix, his absence from events like Bill and Fleur's wedding and the Battle of Hogwarts is pretty difficult to explain.

If HBO's Harry Potter hopes to deliver on its promise to remain book faithful, it really can't get around introducing both Charlie and Bill in its fourth season. Then, for the very first time, the Weasley family in its entirety will be featured on screen (beyond a blurry photograph).

Bill & Charlie Weren't The Only Neglected Weasleys

Charlie and Bill are absolutely step one when it comes to HBO's Harry Potter setting the Weasley family right. Still, that can't be the end. The books gave us a delightful picture of the Weasleys' extended family. For example, we know that, before she was married, Molly's last name was Prewett. She had an aunt Muriel, who comes into the picture in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and an uncle Bilius, after whom Ron is named. Molly also had two brothers, Fabian and Gideon, who were members of the original Order of the Phoenix and died during the First Wizarding War.

Fabian and Gideon never appear in Harry Potter, but their names and legacies are sprinkled throughout the books. They were fallen heroes, Harry inherited Fabian's golden watch, and it's even suggested that they might have been twins and the inspiration for Fred and George's names. All of this adds significantly to the heart of Harry Potter, but without a broader look at the Weasleys, these details are lost. HBO absolutely must bring them back.
