Indonesia assesses 1,000 sites for 2027 Red and White Fishing Villages

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) has begun verifying land readiness, management institutions, and business plans for 1,000 potential sites for the Red and White Fishing Villages (KNMP), which are slated for development by 2027.
Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated in a press briefing in Jakarta on Friday that the assessment is crucial to ensure development meets fishing communities’ needs and is supported by a management framework that guarantees long-term sustainability.
"We want to ensure that future KNMP developments meet the needs of fishing communities, support local business potential, and are backed by management structures that ensure sustainable benefits," Trenggono said.
To support the process, the ministry has trained 3,500 participants from 37 provinces to help survey the thousands of potential sites for the 2027 KNMP projects.
The online training, held from October 27 to 29, 2026, involved representatives from universities, local non-governmental organizations, marine and fisheries polytechnics, and the ministry's technical implementation units (UPT) for fishing ports.
Participants received training in data collection and verification, community interviews, field observations, and the use of digital survey tools.
The survey, assessment, and facilitation of site readiness are scheduled to continue until mid-December 2026.
Director General of Capture Fisheries at the ministry Lotharia Latif said the assessment must identify the specific needs of small-scale fishers, fishing vessel crew members, women working in the fisheries sector, fish processors, and traders.
The findings will serve as the basis for determining the facilities and services required, ranging from catch handling and processing to market access.
Latif said infrastructure development would not deliver optimal benefits unless the facilities were properly utilized, maintained, and managed.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Abdi, head of the task force for the preparation and planning of potential KNMP sites for 2027, said candidate locations would be evaluated based on community needs, fishery potential, site readiness, market access, and supporting infrastructure.
Priority locations would subsequently receive assistance to ensure readiness in terms of land availability, management institutions, business plans, and support from local communities and regional governments before proceeding to the technical planning phase.
Abdi emphasized that submitting a proposal or receiving a visit from a survey team did not mean that a site had been officially designated for KNMP construction.
