Cameron vs. Mayer: The numbers, analysis and predictions

Chantelle Cameron and Mikaela Mayer will fight to unify three women's junior middleweight world titles when they meet Saturday at bp pulse LIVE Arena in Birmingham, England (ESPN+, noon ET).

Cameron (22-1, 8 KOs), from nearby Northampton, holds the WBO title. Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs), of Woodland Hills, California, will defend her WBC and WBA belts.

Cameron is the only fighter to defeat Katie Taylor as a professional. She won a majority decision over Taylor in May 2023 before losing the rematch by majority decision six months later. Both fights took place at 3Arena in Dublin.

Since the loss to Taylor, Cameron has won four consecutive fights, with each of her past three victories coming by one-sided unanimous decision. Mayer is 3-0 since losing a split decision to Natasha Jonas while challenging for the IBF welterweight title in January 2024.

"I've been working on more defense and more output," Mayer said in July when the fight was officially announced. "I've had a high punch count, high volume, but just making it more clear and not letting the combo get returned on me.

"We can both box because we come from an amateur pedigree, but if you look at our professional fights, we do tend to like to come forward and let our hands go. So, you're definitely going to see that at some point."

Cameron also sees similarities between herself and Mayer, particularly their willingness to take on the best opponents.

"We want to fight the best, and that's why I've got a lot of respect for her because she's not shy to back down from a challenge," Cameron said. "I want to fight the very best, and Mikaela is on that list as well."

What the experts have to say about the fight

The matchup: I think it could be a fight of the year. The fans are in for a treat -- they're going to be the winners. I really think this is a 50-50 fight. I think both fighters are amazing, talented fighters -- both have great amateur experience. They've been against tough fighters. They show their grit. They show everything they need to show as professionals, they are world champions. So, I think the winner is whoever's going to show up that night and execute the game plan and listen to their corner and just make sure that they do everything that they train hard for. They're evenly matched, and I think it's a great matchup. I'm going to get my popcorn ready. I'm going to sit down and enjoy the show.

How does Mayer win the fight?: Mikaela needs to keep her distance. She's tall, she's long. Make sure the power is at the end of the punch. Make sure she doesn't have Chantelle coming in and just keep throwing her long punches. And she's a gritty fighter as well.

Mikaela's so good on the outside. She has long punches, and the power is at the end of her punches. So, when you're in there and you're fighting close, she's going to smother her opponent's punches. She's a tremendous inside fighter as well, but to clearly have the judges on her side, obviously with the fight being in the U.K., I think she needs to keep the fight at long distance and make sure that she lands her punches from the outside -- make sure Chantelle doesn't come in -- because I think that's what's going to get her an easy, clear win.

How does Cameron win the fight?: Cameron needs to stay close to Mikaela and make sure that she's not at the end of long punches. Keep coming forward and just fight her fight and make sure she doesn't let Mikaela keep the distance. Keep coming forward and keep nonstop punching.

Prediction: The fans are winning, that's for sure. It's so hard to pick a winner because they're both so good. They're both so talented. They've been in great fights. They show a lot of heart, and show skills. So, whoever's night it is that night, then that's what's going to happen. Whoever shows up and wants it more and follows the game plan, that's going to be the clear winner. I think it's definitely the fight of the year.

The matchup: Cameron vs. Mayer is likely to be the fight of the year in women's boxing -- and there've already been a number of good ones. And this could easily be people's favorite fight of the year regardless of gender. It's bound to be exciting. Both of these women, even in their mid-30s, are still really in their boxing prime. Both are fighting fantastically well. Mayer especially has amazingly, in her last couple of years, gotten better, continues to get better. And she is both a boxer and a puncher in the sense that she gets lots of knockouts, and that she's very offensive-minded. But also in the last couple years especially she has found better movement, she moves around more and provides angles against fighters. That is what she's going to have to do against Cameron.

How does Mayer win the fight?: Cameron is as good an inside fighter as there is in women's boxing, there aren't many better than her. And when she gets in there, she is a handful. And so, for Mayer, while she can battle her that way, her ticket to win is to give angles and add that other element.

Tactically, I think it's all about whether Mayer can add that additional element of using angles and not staying in the pocket every second with Cameron. She could win the fight by being in the pocket -- it's not impossible for her to win that fight that way -- but for her, it's more advantageous to do that a little bit and also do the angles, little movement, sit down on her punches, throw the combinations. Mayer might win a firefight, but she has that other element to her boxing game, which she has made so much better in the past couple of years: fighting on the inside.

How does Cameron win the fight?: I think the key is to make the fight inside, get in there, cut off the ring if Mayer moves a little bit and just bang away with those level left hooks and keep whacking away on the inside. If she does, I think it's going to be a very exciting fight. The key is absolutely to get inside, to get in that closer mid-punching range where she can nullify some of the long punches of Mayer, even though Mayer fights well on the inside. So, from a tactical standpoint, it's pretty simple. Probably the one thing about this fight that is so simple -- and it might end up being changed by Cameron, who is capable of changing -- is that Mayer has two ways to win this fight, Cameron has one way. Now, Cameron may win it that way by getting inside, by making it that fight, by taking away any Mayer angles and movement and turning it into an absolute battle on the inside. That is how Cameron wins it.

X-factor: The weight class. Mayer is a little more experienced at higher weight. Cameron fought her last fight at 154 pounds, but Mayer has had more fights higher than 140 pounds than Cameron. The one thing you can say is Cameron isn't taking on a woman that's spent her whole life at 154. So that part is good for her, but it will be interesting to see what that higher weight does for both women.

Prediction: I would lean to Mayer because she has a few more tools in her toolkit, but it is not going to be easy. And for Cameron, when you think about her career, my God, she's only got the one loss to Katie Taylor, which easily could have gone her way. And while she's certainly achieved some acclaim and she's won titles and all the rest of it, it's interesting that here she is at this fight that is so important and has to take on a beast in Mayer. However this fight goes, one thing I really hope is that, if Cameron doesn't win, people continue to recognize how good she has been and how good she's likely to continue to be. The good thing about women's boxing is if you still fight well, you don't get cast aside. I'm not presupposing Cameron is going to lose, but I kind of lean toward Mayer.
