MANILA, Philippines — A Pasay cop faces a complaint from the National Police Commission (Napolcom) after his live-in partner accused him of repeatedly beating and threatening her throughout their nearly six years of living together.

The live-in partner, identified only as alias Kara, filed an administrative complaint against Police Staff Sgt. Tyran John Miranda at the Napolcom central office on Thursday.

“Repeated abuse, physically, emotionally, and mentally. He repeatedly beat me,” Kara said at a press briefing.

Kara traced the alleged abuse to December 2022, when Miranda pointed a gun at her inside her car.

She said she had previously filed a complaint against Miranda but did not pursue the case, hoping to keep her family intact.

“This is the first time I’ve ever fought back. This is the only time, really,” she added.

Napolcom Vice Chair and Executive Officer Rafael Vicente Calinisan said the acts shown in the videos could constitute grave misconduct and conduct unbecoming of a police officer, offenses punishable by suspension, demotion, or dismissal.

“Due process, fine. But I don’t think there’s an excuse for someone hitting a female, multiple times at that,” Calinisan said.

“I don’t think he deserves to be out on the streets, in the home with Kara and the kid. He deserves the heaviest punishment there is,” he added.

Calinisan directed the commission’s Inspection, Monitoring and Investigation Service to expedite the investigation and file the appropriate charges.

Miranda, who was brought in by his superiors, said he let his temper take over when asked why he went after Kara with a gun.

He apologized and said he would accept the consequences of the case.

Miranda has been relieved from his post, disarmed, and placed under restrictive custody at the Pasay police district.
