Harry Styles Debuts New Song Written for Liam Payne on Second Anniversary of His Death

Harry Styles paid tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on Friday night, debuting an unreleased song he wrote for his friend during his ongoing Madison Square Garden residency.
The performance came on October 16th, exactly two years after Payne died at age 31 in Buenos Aires. Before introducing the song, titled “What Is Enough,” Styles reflected on the people who helped him reach the stage and urged the crowd to look after one another.
“I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, this building means a lot to me, as I said, and I feel incredibly proud when I get to look up there and see my name up there from the last time,” Styles told the audience. “But there’s so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with, that I’ve never been able to do this without them, and, two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”
“I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things; I hope you haven’t, but… Really, it’s just about looking after each other,” he continued. “There’s so many more people than my name that’s on that banner, there’s so many more people behind it, so many people that’ve touched my life, in such special ways, I wouldn’t be here without them.”
Styles then introduced “What Is Enough,” telling the crowd, “I’m gonna play a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s alright, we’ll get all through.” He performed the unreleased track alone with guitar, with lyrics grappling directly with grief, regret, and the impossibility of calling someone back after they’re gone. At one point, he sings, “You dance until your time/ now you don’t/ now you never will, will you?” before imagining his friend among the stars, as gentle, ethereal accompaniment from the band lifts the song upward toward him.
Payne died on October 16th, 2024, after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires. His death prompted tributes from Styles and their fellow former One Direction members Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. The five singers formed One Direction on The X Factor in 2010 and remained together until the group began an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
“What Is Enough” arrived during Styles’ 30-show “Together, Together” residency at Madison Square Garden, part of the tour supporting his latest album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. The New York run continues through October 31st. Learn how to get tickets here.
