German champion Bayern Munich was held to a 3-3 draw by Norwegian outfit Viking Stavanger in the UEFA Champions League 2026-27 at the Viking Stadion on Tuesday.

Viking appeared to be heading for a famous win over Bayern when it led 2-0 at half-time. Gianni Stensness headed the host in front in the second minute before Peter Christiansen doubled its advantage.

Harry Kane pulled one back from a penalty early in the second half and then headed in his eighth goal of the season in nine games in all competitions.

Luis Diaz then converted as the match was turned completely on its head, but Bayern’s Michael Olise was sent off in the 74th minute — the France star was booked and then shown a second yellow seconds later for throwing the ball at his opponent.

He will therefore miss next week’s home meeting with Arsenal.

Viking Stavanger history

Viking might be an underdog in the upper echelons of European club football, but it is a heavyweight in Norway. Founded in 1899, it returned to the Champions League after winning a first Norwegian title in 34 years.

The club is one of the most successful ones in Eliteserien, the Norwegian top-flight for men’s club football. Viking has won nine league titles in its history, the joint second-most trophies along with Fredrikstad in the competition’s history.

One of its defenders, Henrik Falchener, who started against the Bavarians, was part of Norway’s FIFA World Cup 2026 squad. He had started in Norway’s 1-4 loss to France in the group stage.
