Surallah, South Cotabato Mayor suspends face-to-face classes due to recent school shooting, reports of threats

Surallah, South Cotabato Mayor Pedro Matinog Jr. announced the suspension of face-to-face classes on Monday, September 21, 2026 in all Elementary to Senior High School in both pubic and private schools due to the recent school shooting and reports of threats against schools.

"All concerned schools are hereby advised to shift from face-to-face instruction to appropriate alternative learning modality subject to existing guidelines, policies and procedure of the Department of Education and the respective school administration," said Matinog.

The suspension of classes starts on Monday and separate announcement for resumption will be made.

On Friday, at least three students were killed, and eight others were injured following the school shooting in Banga, South Cotabato, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Meanwhile, the Surallah Municipal Police Station (Surallah MPS) said is working to verify, assess, and validate reports concerning threats against schools in Surallah, South Cotabato.

"Authorities are also undertaking appropriate measures to identify and locate the individuals behind the dissemination of these threats, including those using fake, dummy, or unauthorized Facebook accounts, as well as accounts that may appear to be official," said Surallah MPS.

"The public is urged to remain calm and vigilant and to refrain from sharing or reposting unverified information that may cause unnecessary fear or alarm," it added.

The police also reminded the public to verify information before sharing post and to report suspicious accounts, posts, or threats to the proper authorities for immediate assessment and appropriate action. — BAP, GMA News
