Canadian swimming star Summer McIntosh was out-touched for gold by 0.02 seconds in the women’s 200-metre individual medley at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships on Saturday.
The reigning Olympic and world champion from Toronto took silver behind China's Yu Yiting, who set a championship record with a time of two minutes 7.45 seconds on the final evening of competition in Irvine, Calif.

Yu was under world-record pace on the opening butterfly leg before American Regan Smith took over the lead on the backstroke. Yu moved back in front on the breaststroke and held off McIntosh in the closing metres.
It's McIntosh's third individual medal of the outdoor meet after winning gold in the 400m medley and silver in the 200m freestyle. She also helped Canada earn bronze in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay.

The 19-year-old McIntosh was swimming in her last individual race as a teenager.
"I know that I've accomplished a lot being so young and I've learned so much these past couple years. Going into my 20s, I hope to learn even more," she said.

Fellow Canadian Alexanne Lepage won the women's 200m breaststroke final later Saturday after leading the entire race and touching in a lifetime best of 2:21.73, beating reigning Olympic and world champion Kate Douglass of the United States.
Douglass rallied from third down the stretch but couldn't catch the Vernon, B.C., native, finishing second in 2:22.57. South Africa's Kaylene Corbett was third in 2:22.97.
"I feel like I'm just a little in shock to be honest," Lepage said.
Canada's Sophie Angus finished eighth with a time of 2:26.02.
Canada finishes with 13 medals (three gold, four silver, six bronze), its most at the Pan Pacific Championships since winning 12 at the 1997 edition in Fukuoka, Japan. The U.S. topped the overall medal standings with 50, followed by Australia (35) and Canada.

Ruck, from Kelowna, B.C., previously set the national record in 2018 with a mark of 24.26 at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
"It means a lot definitely, just to see hard work paying off from this year of training," Ruck said. "I didn't really know it was the best time until just a few seconds go. I just feel like it was a really good effort."

Kate Douglass took 50-metre freestyle gold with a world record time of 23.19. Taylor Ruck of of Kelowna, B.C., swam to a new Canadian record time of 24.23.In the morning preliminaries, the 24-year-old Douglass swam 23.49 to take the world record away from teammate Gretchen Walsh, who finished second in the evening final in 23.74.
Walsh had owned the 50 free record of 23.55 since setting it in June at an international meet in Rome.
It's the third time Douglass has lowered the world mark in the sprint race. She first did it on June 19 at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Indianapolis, posting a time of 23.59. Nine days later, Walsh lowered it again.
Douglass is a five-time Olympic medalist. She earned silver in the 50 free at the 2024 world championships but didn't compete in the event at the 2024 Paris Games.
Her 50 free was the second individual world record set at the meet.

Lani Pallister of Australia stunned Katie Ledecky with her first international loss in the 800m freestyle.
Pallister was under world-record pace for much of the race and touched in 8:06.10 to erase Ledecky's championship record from 2018.
Ledecky took silver in 8:07.26. She is the four-time Olympic champion in her signature event. The American's lone previous defeat in an 800 free final since 2010 came in a small domestic meet in February 2024 against McIntosh.
