The storm is here: Georgia-Alabama set to write latest chapter after chaotic week around Hurricane Isaias

Translate

TUSCALOOSA, AL — There were two sides to the buildup between Georgia versus Alabama heading into tonight's showdown in Tuscaloosa.

First, it was Hurricane Isaias barreling toward the Gulf Coast on Friday afternoon, as evacuations took place and preparations were well underway throughout the Southeast for what was going to be a long night of bad weather.

Second, a massive SEC showdown that will set the tone for both teams moving forward this season, with Alabama hoping to make a statement about where it stands right now during the Kalen DeBoer era, while Kirby Smart hopes to start adding wins against the Tide in regular season play.

ALABAMA FOOTBALL, DODGERS BASEBALL AND TWO NFL GAMES: INSIDE ONE GROUP'S INCREDIBLE SOUTHERN SPORTS TRIP

A collision course for two teams, with a lot on the line.

During the week, questions lingered about whether this game would actually take place with Hurricane Isaias making landfall and then heading on a northern track through the state of Alabama.

University officials had met multiple times in the days and hours leading up to this weekend to discuss contingency plans in case the game needed to either be postponed a few hours, or moved.

All the while, Alabama decided that fans would not be allowed to set up any type of tailgate until after 12 noon local time today in an abundance of caution for the wind and rain that would devour the area.

FIVE IMPORTANT COLLEGE FOOTBALL QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE ANSWERED AFTER THIS WEEKEND'S SLATE

This forced President Donald Trump, who was scheduled to attend the SEC showdown, to back out of traveling to Alabama, with a final decision coming on Friday afternoon. In reality, with everything taking place around Tuscaloosa over a 48-hour period, this turned out to be the most logical decision for all parties involved.

Power trucks sat in the parking lot of the Tuscaloosa mall, while the campus started to slow down on Friday night, with so many unknowns leading up to this day.

Can Georgia find a way to get Alabama during the regular season?

On the field tonight, this is about two SEC teams looking to make a statement. Kirby Smart is hoping to exorcise some of the Crimson Tide demons that have followed him during his time as the Bulldogs head coach.

Smart is 2-7 against Alabama during his time in Athens, which is a record he would prefer to start chipping away at. Sure, he's obviously had success against the Tide during the postseason, but there is obviously something different about rolling into Bryant Denny Stadium and beating the school that afforded him the chance to become a head coach.

To do that, the Dawgs might have to flip the script compared to what some are thinking.

Can quarterback Gunner Stockton beat Alabama through the air?

Sure, but this is also against a team that is starting to find its offensive wings behind Keelon Russell, along with a defense that has clearly found an aggressiveness that we haven’t seen on a consistent basis during DeBoer's tenure in Tuscaloosa.

In reality, these two teams are finding their own identities. For Alabama, last week's dominant win against Mississippi State seems to have instilled a confidence within the fan base.

"I'm not going to compare this type of aggression to the Saban era, but they look as though they're playing pissed off," Edward, from Cullman told OutKick. "I don't know what changed, but it's pretty obvious that Kane Wommack has found a cohesive group.

"Hell, I don't care what it is. But, if we keep this up then who knows where this team could end up this season. We gotta get through the Dawgs, and I really want to see them beat Georgia with a strong defensive performance. I was kind of hoping the rain would at least stick around and allow us to get dirty in the trenches."

Don't worry, it will be nasty inside Bryant Denny Stadium tonight

The last time Kirby Smart led his team out of the visitors locker room in Tuscaloosa, he stood at the gate bouncing up and down as 'Thunderstruck' played over the stadium loudspeakers.

If he could've, the Georgia head coach looked as though he was ready to throw on pads himself. What we will see tonight are two teams looking to create their own narrative around the 2026 season.

This isn’t about last year, or the teams that came before them.

But, that doesn’t mean these players don't understand what it means to take the field in this heated rivalry. All week, the college football world has drooled over a well-done Nick Saban documentary, while Kirby Smart smiled and complimented his former boss during a number of interviews.

Around Alabama, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear that Kalen DeBoer has heard the tales being told about the guy he replaced.

And while those stories will live on forever, DeBoer is still working to quiet the noise that comes with every decision made regarding his football team.

What would Saban do? How would Nick handle the game plan? What does the guy who still has an office inside Bryant Denny Stadium really think about his successor?

Tonight, the guy that replaced the legend gets a chance to create a smidge of distance between himself and what many proclaim to be the GOAT of college football coaching.

On the other side, Kirby Smart is hoping to tighten-up his record against the team who employed him as defensive coordinator.

Even though there is obviously more on the line than a regular weekend in the SEC, both Georgia and Alabama are trying to write their own story pertaining to the 2026 season.

That road to the college football playoff continues tonight in Tuscaloosa, with two teams who have grown to truly hate each other, with just a little respect thrown in.
