Singapore haze watch: Air quality hits unhealthy levels in four regions; north stays moderate

SINGAPORE, Sept 30 — Air quality in northern Singapore improved overnight, falling back into the moderate range at 3am on Wednesday (September 30). 

Elsewhere, the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) remains in the unhealthy range.

At 8am, PSI ranged between 112 to 118 in eastern (118), southern (112), western (118) and central (117) Singapore.

Meanwhile, one-hour PM2.5 is in the elevated band in all five regions, with eastern Singapore recording the highest concentration reading of 79.

Members of the public should note that the health impact of haze is dependent on one’s health status, the PSI level, as well as the length and intensity of outdoor activity.

Those intending to participate in immediate outdoor activities should check the one-hour PM2.5 reading.

When concentration reading is in the elevated band, healthy persons should reduce strenuous outdoor activity for the next hour, while vulnerable persons should avoid such activities.

PSI forecast for September 30

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said in its daily haze situation update on Tuesday evening that it expects the country’s 24-hour PSI forecast to be in the high-moderate to mid-unhealthy range. 

Moderate to dense smoke haze from fires in Kalimantan have continued to drift towards Singapore, while haze was also observed from fires detected in southern Sumatra, NEA explained.

Noting that dry conditions are expected to persist over southern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan, and the prevailing easterly or south-easterly winds, the agency said there remains a risk of smoke haze affecting Singapore. — AsiaOne
