Gay Immigrant Comedy ‘One Baby, Please!’ to Hit OUTtv Next Month as Latest Queer Series From Canada

The indie gay immigrant comedy One Baby, Please!, created by and starring Karim Adam Ahmed and Adrian Neblett, is set to bow on OUTtv across the U.S. and Canada on Nov. 2, it was announced Monday.

The six-parter centers on Omar, a laid-back Egyptian Canadian, and Dieon, his uptight Barbadian Canadian husband, as they battle with sperm tests, egg donors and their friends to have a “gayby” or a surrogate baby.

The comedy, as it features LGBTQ+ people navigating fertility, surrogacy and parenthood, is the latest queer-themed TV series to come out of Canada after the gay hockey drama Heated Rivalry, comedy Pass The Salt and Slo Pitch, a mockumentary about a ragtag LGBTQ+ softball team executive produced by Elliot Page.

One Baby, Please! will also stream through OUTtv’s channels in Australia and New Zealand and on Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube TV and Roku, as well as OUTflix in the UK and Ireland.

“When we started this, I didn’t know a single show where a queer Arab man got to be the romantic lead, let alone the guy trying to become a father. For five years, Adrian and I held onto this story because we knew someone out there needed to see it. Now they finally can, and I hope they laugh as hard as they feel seen,” Ahmed explained in a statement.

The creative team behind the comedy includes executive producer Anthony Q. Farrell (The Office), and story editor Teresa Pavlinek, a writer and consulting producer on Schitt’s Creek.

Series producer Kate Green added in her own statement: “One Baby, Please! is about two guys who just want to have a baby — and discover that absolutely everyone has an opinion about how they should do it. It’s a comedy about the chaos of making a family, but underneath all the ridiculousness is a very universal story about love, identity, culture and belonging.”

The premiere of One Baby, Please! comes amid a boom in Canadian queer comedies and follows acclaimed series Sort Of, a CBC/HBO dramedy about a gender-fluid millennial who is in transition in every aspect of their life, and Schitt’s Creek, the CBC/Netflix comedy where Dan Levy played a pansexual character.
