Supergirl meets the end of a major era for the DC Universe movie on HBO Max, but Kara's future in the franchise still appears to be bright. Supergirl was originally released in theaters on June 26. Given the success of James Gunn's Superman movie and the fact that Milly Alcock had debuted as Supergirl as a cameo in the end of Superman, it seemed like her solo movie was destined for success. However, that is not what happened. With a reported budget of $170 million, Supergirl ended up becoming a major box office bomb early in the DCU's run with just $126.4 million.
While Supergirl might not have been a hit when it was in theaters, the new DC movie went on to have a perfect run on digital and streaming, trending in both global and domestic charts. Supergirl's success on HBO Max came as a two-punch hit for Gunn's DCU, as HBO's live-action Green Lantern series, Lanterns, also became a global streaming sensation, allowing DC to dominate the streamer's charts for a long time. However, everything must come to an end at some point, and Supergirl has now officially reached the end of its successful era on HBO Max after a solid run.
Supergirl Has Completely Fallen Off Of HBO Max's Top 10
According to FlixPatrol, Supergirl finally dropped out of HBO Max's Top 10 Movies chart in the United States this Saturday, October 17. Taking its place on the coveted streaming chart is The Cat in the Hat, which stars Mike Myers, Dakota Fanning, and more. Supergirl originally arrived on HBO Max on September 10, instantly leading the streaming service's chart. As such, the first DCU movie of 2026 managed to stay on HBO Max's Top 10 Movies chart in the US for over a month, which is an impressive feat, making up for its disappointing box office run.

Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score.
With Supergirl now out of the chart, there are no DC movies on the list, with HBO Max's most-watched movie in the United States right now being the Sydney Sweeney R-rated psychological thriller The Housemaid, which arrived on the streamer recently, on October 9. That said, the DCU's Lanterns still holds strong at #2 on the streamer's nationwide TV show chart, only losing to the legal thriller series War. Supergirl also remains a global hit for the streaming service, as per FlixPatrol, Alcock's Supergirl movie is still HBO Max's 9th most-watched movie worldwide. According to FlixPatrol, Supergirl is trending in 18 countries.
Milly Alcock's Hero Still Has A Bright Future In The DCU
While Supergirl's box office indicates that a sequel is unlikely to happen, the DC movie's streaming success on HBO Max, even if its peak era has ended, is a positive sign that Alcock's version of the Girl of Steel is enjoyed by fans. Supergirl should have a bright future in the DCU, appearing in other characters' projects, and Kara already has her next DCU appearance set. Alcock will return as Supergirl in 2027's Man of Tomorrow, helping David Corenswet's Superman and other heroes fight Brainiac. This connects to Supergirl's ending, where Kara came back to live on Earth.
