Confusion and conflicting information about the end of Young Sheldon created a rift among the cast.

Two years after The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, its first-ever spinioff continued its legacy and ran for five more seasons. Despite initial skepticism, Young Sheldon won viewers, with some even thinking that it's better than its parent show. Throughout that time the period piece outgrew its original premise as Sheldon's origins story, thanks to creators Chuck Lorre, Steven Holland, and Steve Molaro diversifying its storytelling. With the rest of the Coopers getting respective narratives, the public had more options of characters to be invested in.

The shift in focus paid off. Young Sheldon solidified itself as the number 1 comedy after taking over The Big Bang Theory's timeslot. It established an identity separate from its parent series and became one of the best family dramedy in recent history. Unfortunately, because the show was tied to the nerd-centric sitcom's canon, it had a pre-determined end before it even started. Still, there were calls for it to continue beyond George's death and Sheldon's move to Caltech. This was where information about the future of Young Sheldon became confusing even for those involved, as the decision to wrap it surprised some more than others.

In Jessica Radloff's new book, Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy, people who were closely involved with the series recalled the decision to end Young Sheldon in season 7. Unfortunately, different people got different ideas of when the series would end, with Missy actor, Raegan Revord's camp recalling active conversations about continuing the series beyond George's death and Sheldon's departure from Texas. Meanwhile, Iain Armitage revealed that he never thought that Young Sheldon was going to continue past season 7. In a subsequent Instagram post from Radloff, she said that there were "a lot of tears and anger" came out during this part of the interview with the people involved. Read an excerpt of the book below:

Holly Revord: During the strike, we were with Holland a lot, picketing. We didn’t know what the future of Young Sheldon looked like, but I was always trying to have conversations with Holland about it, like what happens after George dies, and Mary’s a single mom to teenagers.

Lance Barber: I think from what I was told secondhand, the producers said, “Yeah, we want to see Missy graduate high school, and we want to take this as long as we can and we can cheat [the timeline].”

Iain Armitage: I didn’t expect the show to go on forever. I expected it to go for about six or seven years.

Lee Armitage: But I think Raegan felt they were promised like, “You’re going to be doing this show until…“ and Iain never had that conversation. People would say, “Would you do more?” just to find out where he was with it. And I would tell Iain, “Don’t give a yes or a no; take the time to think it through, and talk to your agent, talk to me, think about it.” So all my care was put into how to handle it if that ever came about.

Raegan Revord: I definitely thought we had another couple years. At some point, I think business affairs came to us to negotiate about a pickup, so when we were told the show was ending, it was shocking. And yeah, Lance, Zoe and I would be surrounding Holland all the time on the picket line, pitching stories, asking what might happen, et cetera. We definitely asked a lot of questions, but I do know everything was tentative because in this business, nothing is concrete until the episode is out. Still, there were discussions about where the show could go after George’s death, but we weren’t ever told, like, “Oh yeah, it’s happening.” That was never told. But the discussions were there.

Steve Holland: The actors joined us a bunch on the picket lines and there was definitely—and understandably—a lot of interest about the future of the show. At that time, we weren’t even sure we were going to get back to doing a season seven or if the strike was going to throw the whole season off. But I certainly never thought the show had four more years left in it.

The Young Sheldon cast CBS (via MovieStillsDb)

Young Sheldon's future beyond seaosn 7 could have easily gone either way. CBS would have likely kept the project on the air, considering its success. It already lost The Big Bang Theory five years earlier after Jim Parsons' decision to exit the show, and instead of continuing, the cast and crew decided to wrap it altogether. That said, the writers of the prequel had a major crossroad in front of them — they could continue with the shift in its storytelling or stay true to its original premise and end it when Sheldon wrapped his time in Texas. They chose the latter

On the one hand, it's understandable that Armitage thought that Young Sheldon season 7 was a good endpoint for the series. His character had major transformation throughout that time, and it was time for Sheldon to leave home and embark on a new adventure. There was no way that the series could have further stretched out the time that he was with his family in Texas. That said, it also makes sense for Revord to feel like Young Sheldon's ending could have been pushed because there was so much story potential left for her character. In fact, Missy was the most ignored player in the show's truncated final season, even though she was the most compelling.

It's curious if Lorre, Molaro, and Holland ever considered just rebranding Young Sheldon past the show's ending, similar to what ABC did with Roseanne and The Conners. Granted that CBS now has Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage as a replacement series, it still doesn't quite fill the void left by the original The Big Bang Theory prequel. Unfortunately, at this point, it's too late to do something substantial about this missed opportunity.
