Honda Civic driver gets attempted murder charge for ramming policeman at Ipoh roadblock

IPOH, Sept 30 — A car wash worker pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of attempting to murder a traffic policeman on Sept 24.

K. Viknes, 29, entered the plea after the charge was read out before Judge Norhayati Mohamad Yunus.

According to the charge sheet, Viknes, who was driving a Honda Civic, attempted to murder Lance Corporal Badrul Izwany Pauzi, 29, by ramming the vehicle into the victim, knowing that the act could result in death.

The charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Raveena proposed bail of RM100,000, taking into account that the victim was a public servant performing his duties at the time of the incident, and requested that the accused surrender his passport pending disposal of the case.

However, lawyer Jagdave Singh, representing the accused, requested lower bail of RM10,000, saying his client earns only RM50 a day and is the sole breadwinner supporting his mother and two school-going siblings.

Judge Norhayati set bail at RM20,000 with one surety, subject to additional conditions, including that the accused report to the nearest police station once a month, not interfere with witnesses and surrender his passport to the court.

The court fixed Oct 26 for mention.

Badrul Izwany reportedly suffered a broken left arm and right leg on Sept 24 after being struck by a car driven by a man allegedly attempting to evade a police roadblock. The incident later went viral on social media. — Bernama
