At Mumbai’s Dome SVP, the roar of the crowd was loud enough to drown out even one’s inner thoughts as 5,000 fans watched India’s finest Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) teams fight it out for a place on the global stage.
But as the gunfire faded at the 2026 Battlegrounds Mobile India International Cup (BMIC), Gladiators, the nearly-men, sank to their seats in despair.
After slipping to 12th at the halfway stage, the Neyo-led side mounted a remarkable late charge to finish fourth with 144 points. But an all-Korean podium, led by RedForce, ensured no Indian team qualified for the Group stage of the PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC) from this competition.
S8UL will represent India in the Gauntlet stage, having earlier qualified through the Battlegrounds Mobile Showdown (BMSD).
Outrage enjoyed a Chicken Dinner in the final Rondo (Match 13) after NinjaBoi’s ‘nades knocked out two RedForce players. Becoming the first Indian side to cross 100 points, Outrage had momentarily climbed to tied-third.
The Gladiators came alive in Match 15, with Neyo (six finishes, 912 damage, and five knocks) and Justin (four finishes, 496 damage, and four knocks) leading the charge to overtake Outrage into fourth with a WWCD.
The qualification equation eventually trickled down to the final game, with Gladiators only needing a better finish than Dplus.
India’s Blitz briefly helped by opening fire on Dplus during its rotation. But the Korean outfit’s Favian extinguished all hopes by fragging DeltaPG, the last of the Gladiators.
“We were hoping for the Gladiators to die from the get-go. ‘Die soon, die soon’ was the idea constantly hovering over our heads. An opportunity eventually presented,” he would later tell Sportstar.
RedForce finished on 233 points, 82 ahead of DRX, after collecting five Chicken Dinners. Dplus finished third, two points behind DRX.
K9’s Tauruss provided the silver lining, winning Best Clutch for emerging unhurt from a 1v3 situation.
Karan Pathak, associate director of esports at KRAFTON, the publishers of BGMI, seemed content with the turnout nonetheless. “The capacity is 4,000, but we’ve still managed to accommodate 1,000 more with proper seating and security by adding chairs in front of the stage. Everything upstairs is sold out,” he told this publication on the sidelines of the tournament.
BMIC 2026 may have ended with a reminder that while India’s esports community continues to grow, its competitive ambitions remain a work in progress.
“If players are unable to upgrade themselves and compete at the top level, it becomes very difficult for an ecosystem to sustain by itself. More than whatever we do, the players have to match the levels of other global competitors. Organisers, sponsors, performances, and events all flow once the players are up there,” Pathak opined.
