Durban township to get major new shopping mall

A new shopping mall taking shape in one of Durban’s townships is set to bring a major retail and economic boost to the area, with the R200 million-plus Ntuzuma Mall expected to be completed in 2027.

The 18 000-square-metre development is being built in Ntuzuma G,Ward 42, as part of a broader push to bring investment, jobs and improved services to the area.

Once completed, the mall will introduce new anchor stores, smaller retail outlets, walkways and upgraded surrounding infrastructure, giving residents greater access to shopping and services closer to home.

The development will include line shops alongside the larger anchor stores, while supporting infrastructure such as roads, paving, landscaping and internal and external walkways is also being developed.

Among the major retailers confirmed for the development are Shoprite and Boxer, which will anchor the new centre.

The development was unlocked through the eThekwini Development Planning and Facilitation process as a neighbourhood centre and retail development.

The municipality said it aligns with its broader economic growth and job creation priorities, while also supporting more inclusive spatial development.

AJ Property Holdings will be retained as development and leasing manager. The property development company also recently completed another shopping centre in the Durban area, Kingsburgh Junction in Amanzimtoti.

A second major investment for the area

The mall is also not the only major development taking place in the area.

Running alongside the retail project is a R32 million upgrade of the KwaNozaza ICT Hub, which is being transformed into a modern technology and innovation facility.

The upgraded hub is intended to expand access to digital opportunities in the community and provide infrastructure that can support skills development and innovation.

Together, the two projects represent a combined investment of more than R230 million.
