Indonesia puts domestic gas demand ahead of exports to other countries

Indonesia will prioritize domestic natural gas demand before exporting surplus supplies to other countries, including Singapore, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said.

"We must prioritize domestic needs. Once they are met, we can export to other countries," Bahlil said after a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the presidential palace in Jakarta on Thursday.

His remarks came as Indonesia cuts pipeline gas supplies to Singapore by 31 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) to protect domestic energy supplies.

Indonesia exports about 409.5 MMSCFD of piped gas to Singapore from the Natuna Sea and Sumatra, and the reduction remains within minimum contractual limits, he said.

"We have cut 31 million from the 409 million covered by existing contracts. We have not breached the agreement because we have not crossed the minimum limit," Bahlil said.

Indonesia has also shipped 148 cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG), Bahlil said.

He said some LNG delivered to Singapore was likely resold to other countries, while the rest was used to meet Singapore's domestic demand.

The government continues to assess domestic energy needs when setting future gas export policy, including possible adjustments to LNG shipments, Bahlil said.

Indonesia previously attributed the pipeline cuts to maintenance at production facilities and rising domestic demand. Gas is needed for power generation and as fuel and feedstock for industry.

Bahlil said supply arrangements must comply with existing contracts and that the reduction in gas deliveries to Singapore remained within the agreed minimum limits.

The government is working to ensure adequate energy supplies for households and industry before allocating gas for export.
