Prabowo pledges full support for Indonesia's football development

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto conveyed Indonesia's full support for the advancement of national football through international competitions during a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir.

According to a Cabinet Secretariat statement quoted here on Monday, President Prabowo received Infantino and Thohir at Merdeka Palace earlier that day.

"President Prabowo welcomed the appreciation while affirming the Indonesian government's full support for the advancement of national football, including through hosting international competitions and strengthening the football ecosystem in the country," the statement read.

The statement was issued in response to Infantino's appreciation for Indonesia's success in hosting the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.

The tournament in Indonesia was deemed successful and demonstrated the high level of enthusiasm for, and development of, football in the region.

President Prabowo said he would continue to push for this momentum to become part of a collective effort to advance Indonesian football and achieve greater success, following the national team's performance at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.

On the occasion, Infantino invited Prabowo to watch the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final between Indonesia and Thailand at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Main Stadium in Jakarta on Monday night.

The final was set to be played in front of a full house after 67,000 tickets were sold out.

"Enthusiasm among Indonesian supporters to watch the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 final is overflowing. The committee confirmed that 67,000 tickets for the final against Thailand have sold out," the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) said in an official statement quoted on Monday.

The sold-out tickets underscored strong public support for the Indonesian national team's campaign, with tens of thousands of supporters expected to fill GBK to back the Garuda squad in its bid for its first FIFA ASEAN Cup title.
