NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke was taken to Gurugram after being detained by Delhi Police at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday, ahead of the outfit’s proposed protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were also detained. Ranka was taken to Dwarka, while Das was taken to a location in Delhi.Nearly 1,500 people have been detained in connection with the protest.As he was being detained at the airport, Dipke said, “Even Indira Gandhi didn't do this,” adding, “arrest hone liye hi aaya hu.”Stringent traffic restrictions came into force across Delhi at 6 am on Saturday, with police deploying personnel at barricades and key intersections to check vehicles and regulate movement around the proposed protest site.
The security measures coincided with restrictions on metro services, train cancellations and the suspension of mobile internet services in parts of the capital.The Delhi Traffic Police warned of possible disruptions around Connaught Place, Mandi House, Jantar Mantar, Patel Chowk and other key intersections in central Delhi. Traffic diversions would be implemented depending on the prevailing law and order situation.
According to the traffic advisory, affected stretches include the Ashoka Road-Jantar Mantar Road roundabout, Tolstoy Marg-Janpath crossing, Jai Singh Road-Sansad Marg crossing, Rail Bhawan roundabout, Patel Chowk, Gol Dak Khana and Windsor Place.Delhi Police denied permission for the proposed demonstration, citing law and order concerns and the possibility of inconvenience to residents. In its communication to the party, police said the CJP’s intimation did not qualify as a duly filed application for permission.
