Amorim backs Chukwueze to thrive in new AC Milan wing-back role

New AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim has backed Samuel Chukwueze to thrive in a new wing-back role, insisting the Nigerian possesses the mentality and character required to contribute defensively to his tactical system.

Amorim has settled on a 3-4-2-1 formation as his preferred approach at Milan, using the system throughout the club’s pre-season fixtures as he prepared the team for the new campaign.

While some players have naturally fitted into established roles within the system, others have had to adapt to new positions, with Chukwueze among those who have undergone a tactical change.

The Nigerian returned to Milan following an impressive loan spell at Fulham last season, but has so far been deployed as a wing-back rather than in his familiar attacking winger position.

The change has raised questions among some Milan supporters, particularly about whether the 25-year-old possesses the defensive qualities required for the position, given that he has primarily operated as an attacking player throughout his career.

However, Amorim believes Chukwueze’s ability to defend should not be judged solely on his natural position, arguing that the most important qualities are mentality, determination and character.

Speaking during his press conference on Saturday, the Milan boss explained why he remains confident in the Nigerian’s suitability for the role.

“It depends on the mentality of the player. Sometimes people look at one player because he’s really good offensively and they think he cannot defend,” Amorim said.

“Defending is about spirit and character, which Chukwueze has. He’s improving, of course, he’s not the typical defender, but we think he suits our game.

“He can really help us control the ball, and I think he defended much better against Man Utd.”

Amorim’s comments suggest Chukwueze’s responsibilities will extend beyond his traditional attacking duties as Milan look to exploit his pace, technical ability and capacity to help the team retain possession from a wider position.

The Nigerian is expected to get another opportunity to impress in the role on Sunday evening, with his attacking contribution also likely to remain an important part of Milan’s plans.

After returning from his productive spell at Fulham, Chukwueze will now be hoping to make the most of Amorim’s confidence and potentially add more assists to his tally as he adapts to a new tactical challenge at San Siro.
