Homeless pianist went viral after church performance; 2 years later, he has a home

The new home has also given him a quieter place to continue playing music

In January 2024, homeless man Rhys Wynne-Jones walked into St. Mary’s Church in Penzance, England, on a freezing night and asked if he could play its piano. His performance of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” was recorded by a volunteer and posted on Facebook.

The video quickly went viral, changing the course of his life.Wynne-Jones, who had been homeless for about a decade, had gone to the church looking for shelter, Good news network reported. St. Mary’s is one of Britain’s ‘Night Churches’, which remain open around the clock for vulnerable people. After speaking to volunteers there, the 34-year-old asked if he could use the piano.Music had been a coping mechanism for him for years. As he started playing, volunteers and visitors gathered around to watch.

For Wynne-Jones, the piano offered a way to quiet his thoughts during a difficult period in his life. “There is a lot of noise in my head, but when I play piano my head goes quiet, I feel calm,” he said.

From church piano to charity gigs

The video soon attracted hundreds of comments from people who wanted to know who the young man known as the “Nightchurch Pianist” was. After Wynne-Jones came forward, his unexpected online attention led to more opportunities to play, including a special charity gig where he met British stars such as Ronnie Wood, Peter Andre and members of the cast of EastEnders.

Wynne-Jones soon began using his music to support homeless charities and other good causes. He later collaborated with Peter Andre on a television pilot. He is also due to perform at a number of venues, including a theatre production in Bristol.Despite the attention, Wynne-Jones does not describe himself as a professional musician or celebrity. His focus remains on playing music and raising money for causes linked to homelessness.“I don’t see myself as a professional pianist or a celebrity figure. I only need enough money to cover my expenses,” he told SWNS news. “I just love to play the piano to raise money for homeless charities and good causes.”His performances have helped him raise more than £40,000 for charity, which is about $54,000.

He now has a place to call home

One of the biggest changes in Wynne-Jones’ life has been finding a permanent place to live. After years of homelessness, he moved into a new Coastline Housing development in west Cornwall.The new home has also given him a quieter place to continue playing music. He now practises on his Roland keyboard, while eating and sleeping in a safe place of his own.For Wynne-Jones, however, getting a home has not erased everything he experienced while living on the streets. He said, “the pain doesn’t end just because you’ve got a key”.His new life has nevertheless given him some calm. The memories of his time on the streets now motivate him to help and inspire other people.

More than just a pianist

Wynne-Jones has also shown that his talents extend beyond playing the piano. As part of his act, he can recite all the countries of the world, the elements of the periodic table and the first 100 digits of the number Pi.His musical ability remains at the centre of his public appearances, but the attention surrounding him has also allowed him to connect with people in new ways. He has gained new followers on Instagram and uses those connections to encourage others.
