Sowore returns to Nigeria, set for 2027 presidential campaign

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has returned to Nigeria from the United States on Sunday to resume his 2027 presidential campaign.

Mr Sowore disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday.

He expressed excitement about his return to his family and country after his trip to the US.

According to him, he left for the US over what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.

Mr Sowore said that while in the United States, he engaged Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders on the state of the country and his political agenda.

He also said he participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued his advocacy for voting rights for Nigerians living abroad.

The AAC presidential candidate said he remained committed to the participation of Nigerians in the diaspora in the country’s democratic process.

He said an AAC administration would pursue the implementation of diaspora voting if elected president in 2027.

Mr Sowore said he was expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos before proceeding to Abuja.

He said he would also continue to attend court proceedings in connection with the cybercrime case instituted against him by the State Security Services (SSS) in 2025.

The candidate said his return would mark another phase of his nationwide campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“I plan to engage workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities across the country, ” he said.

He said the engagements would focus on the political, social and economic issues contained in the AAC’s 2027 agenda.

He said the campaign would seek to mobilise Nigerians around issues including equal rights, justice, peace, security and economic development.

Mr Sowore said the 2027 election would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to decide on the direction of the country’s political leadership.

“My campaign will continue to advocate fundamental political, social and economic transformation, ” he said.

The AAC candidate said he remained committed to taking his message directly to Nigerians across the country.

“I will continue the campaign and engagements with Nigerians as the 2027 election approaches, “he said.
