Guillermo Del Toro Buries ‘Digger’ In Praise, Slams “Petty” Review: “Decidedly A Theatrical Experience”

Translate

Although Digger has premiered this weekend to mixed reviews, Guillermo Del Toro is a confirmed fan of the Alejandro G. Iñárritu satire.

The 3x Oscar winner has taken to social media to heap praise on Tom Cruise‘s latest after responding to a critic that called the film “far from a must-watch” and recommended viewers wait for it to hit streaming.

“Entirely Petty headline,” wrote Del Toro in response to IGN’s review. “Love it or not. And, yes, I do. The film delivers in scale, ambition and reach at a theatrical screen level. Daring, bold and cinematically complex. Decidedly a theatrical experience.”

It turns out the algorithm was listening, as the Pan’s Labyrinth auteur has since continued reposting other fans’ praise of the Warner Bros. movie, which is now in theaters.

“Funny, I go into the platform and without even scrolling down, these are popping at the top of my timeline…” he wrote with one repost. “So… I will just keep posting them. Tune in or drop out-“

“Dig or Die – c’mon!” Del Toro wrote with another.

Sitting at a 51% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a C+ CinemaScore, Del Toro compared the bad reviews for Digger to the criticism that surrounded The King of Comedy (1982), The Big Lebowski (1998) and The Counselor (2013), all having since become appreciated by audiences years later.

In Digger, Cruise stars as the titular oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, who races to fix a catastrophe he caused so he can avoid blame and be seen as humanity’s savior.
