IPOH, Oct 26 — Local filmmaker Mohd Asrul Nizam Mohd Yusof, better known as Paklong Zam, continues to explore his creativity in filmmaking through a horror-comedy short film titled Hantu Pon X Boleh Resign.
Produced by ECCO Studio Production, the film draws creative inspiration from the works of the late Mohamad Mohamad Khalid, better known as Mamat Khalid, who was renowned for his distinctive portrayal of local characters, satirical comedy and natural, conversational dialogue.
“This approach aims to produce a work that does not rely solely on jump scares and ghostly appearances, but also captivates audiences through distinctive characters and entertaining situations, despite featuring new actors and incorporating the Perak dialect,” he told Bernama.
Filmed on Oct 5 and 6 with funding support from PORT@IPOH, Mohd Asrul Nizam said the production combines horror, situational comedy and character antics that reflect the everyday lives of Malaysians.
He said the 30-minute film places emphasis on strong characterisation, dialogue, atmosphere and humour that emerges naturally from the storyline.
He said the production of ‘Hantu Pon X Boleh Resign’ also reflects ECCO Studio Production’s continued efforts to create locally distinctive creative content while providing opportunities to nurture talent in directing, acting and audiovisual production.
“Funding support from PORT@IPOH is crucial in helping local creative works come to fruition, particularly by giving arts practitioners the opportunity to realise their ideas and bring their creative output to audiences,” he said.
Asked about the film’s screening, he said it would be shown through wayang pacak (open-air screenings) in appreciation of the Kampung Perepat community in Klang, which had provided considerable cooperation, in addition to being made available on YouTube.
“We are also exploring a collaboration with AE Cinema in Seri Iskandar and expect the film to begin screening around November,” he added.
