DStv sports packages: Streaming prices as of 17 September

DStv will have a total of five new package options to choose from as MultiChoice rolls out one of its biggest changes to the pay-TV service.

THE FIVE NEW PACKAGES

As of today (17 September) DStv’s current package structure will make way for new streaming options which fall in the price brackets of R99 to R799 a month. Subscribers will now choose between:

• Starter — R99/month: 85 channels
• Select — R299/month: 100 channels
• Sports — R399/month: 115 channels
• Movies & Series — R500/month: 115 channels
• Premium — R799/month: 130 channels

The restructure offers a dedicated Sports and Movies and Series tiers for the first time. This allows subscribers to pay specifically for the content they would like to watch.

Alongside the shake-up in pricing structure and a variety of options, there is also new destination channels launching. This includes Wethu+, SuperSport Kickoff, SuperSport Football Plus, M-Net Movies+, Stars and Legends.

The overhaul was unveiled earlier this month at a media briefing at MultiChoice City in Randburg, led by MultiChoice South Africa CEO Willington Ngwepe. He framed the changes as a direct response to changing viewing habits, with MultiChoice attempting to offer what South African audiences are actually willing to pay for. This is also likely to be shaped by streaming competition.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR SUBSCRIBERS?

For sports fans specifically, the new R399 Sports package offers an easy way to access SuperSport content without paying for the full Premium tier.

Movie and series lovers now also get a similar dedicated option at R500 for about 115 channels. Starter packages remains the entry-level offering for basic viewing at R99. This is similar to other streaming giants in South Africa, such as Netflix, with options starting at R59 for a mobile plan or R99 for single device streaming. Disney + has a basic option for R49 a month going up to R179 a month for Disney+ Premium. Amazon Prime starts at R59 or R399 a year.
