We are not at war with the Houthis, Egypt’s parliament assures

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Egyptian House of Representatives, Sameh Shoukry affirmed that Egypt’s mandate to take measures to defend Saudi Arabia is not intended to launch offensive military operations inside Yemen.

During an interview with the Egyptian al-Nahar TV channel on Friday, Shoukry said that Egypt’s position “is not linked to any form of aggression.”

He explained that the statements made by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on this matter are clear and consistent with both Egypt’s diplomatic policy and the doctrine of its armed forces.

He stressed that Egypt is not at war with the Houthis or any other party, and that Cairo is working to avoid war and military operations.

Shoukry emphasized that the mandate granted by the House of Representatives to the President of the Republic relates specifically to the defense of Saudi Arabia and the implementation of necessary measures to protect it and safeguard Arab national security.

He emphasized that Arab national security is an integral part of Egyptian national security, and that the security of Egypt and Saudi Arabia are closely linked—a reality that necessitates working within a comprehensive Arab framework to confront threats.

Aiding Saudi Arabia

Shoukry’s remarks follow statements by President Sisi, in which he requested a mandate from the House of Representatives to authorize the necessary measures to provide military support to Saudi Arabia, should the need arise.

Sisi on October 17 affirmed Egypt’s readiness to take the necessary steps to defend Saudi Arabia, should Riyadh request it.

Subsequently, on October 21, he clarified that any Egyptian military action would be strictly limited to defending Saudi Arabia’s territory and borders, and would not extend to launching an offensive into Yemen.
