East NusaTenggara's quake death toll rises to 38, BNPB says
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s disaster agency said Saturday 38 people had died after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Nagekeo District, East Nusa Tenggara, with 13 others injured.
“As of 3 p.m. today, the death toll stands at 38,” BNPB chief Lt. Gen. Suharyanto said during an online news conference.
Two people sustained serious injuries and 11 suffered minor injuries. About 2,000 residents evacuated independently, according to BNPB.
The agency also reported landslides on several roads and damage to dozens of homes ranging from severe to minor.
One hospital in Maumere was damaged, along with numerous community health centers, known locally as Puskesmas.
“The health minister also reported damage to many community health centers, but only one hospital, in Maumere, was damaged,” Suharyanto said.
Five airports were affected, although their runways remained undamaged, Suharyanto said. Damage was reported in terminal buildings and ranged from minor to severe.
Two seaports, Reo Port and Maumere Port, were also affected by the earthquake.
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Nagekeo district in East Nusa Tenggara early Saturday, according to authorities.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami early warning after the quake, but lifted it at 7:30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time.
