Spider-Man & The Odyssey Slip Down Box Office Chart As Halloween Titles Push Out Summer Blockbusters

Resident Evil and Practical Magic 2 are working together to prove that summer is truly over at the domestic box office.
The witchy legacy sequel Practical Magic 2, which reteams Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman after they co-starred in the original 1998 movie, debuted in theaters on September 11. It took No. 1, officially dethroning the summer blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which debuted on July 31 and held the No. 1 position at the domestic box office for six consecutive weekends (a record for the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger's horror video game adaptation Resident Evil, which stars Weapons' Austin Abrams, followed it into theaters on September 18.

Per Sony Pictures Entertainment, Resident Evil is projected to debut with a 3-day total of $60 million at the domestic box office, which is even higher than Saturday's $53 to $55 million projections and more than enough for it to take No. 1 over Practical Magic 2. It is set to earn the best opening weekend by far for the Resident Evil franchise (beating 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife, which earned $26.6 million during its opening weekend) and the best for a Zach Cregger movie (beating the 2025 smash hit Weapons, which debuted with $43.5 million).
However, Practical Magic 2 isn't budging, falling to No. 2 behind Resident Evil. This sees it pushing Spider-Man: Brand New Day (which is so far the third highest-grossing movie in history) to No. 3 for the first time during its eighth weekend in theaters. Behind it, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (another smash summer hit, which opened on July 17 and has climbed to become the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time) has been pushed to No. 4, knocking it out of the Top 3 for the first time during week 10.

The animated-live action hybrid Coyote vs. Acme (which was cancelled by Warner Bros. in 2023 as a tax write-off before being acquired by Ketchup Entertainment) has maintained its position at No. 5. It has posted yet another narrow drop, this time just 32.8%. However, one title had to exit the chart to make room for Resident Evil. That was the Alan Ritchson action-comedy Runner, which dropped a still-not-bad 51%, falling from No. 4 to No. 6 with a 3-day haul of $3.2 million (per The Numbers).
It remains to be seen if Resident Evil is able to maintain its position at No. 1 for a second weekend. Horror movies are often frontloaded, with sophomore drops of 60% or more. However, Zach Cregger's Weapons avoided that curse last year with a drop of just 43.8%. If it follows in Weapons' footsteps, it could potentially outdo the debuts of the impending new releases, which are the Brad Pitt thriller Heart of the Beast and DreamWorks' animated effort Forgotten Island.
Regardless, Resident Evil's success in tandem with Practical Magic 2 proves that horror and supernaturally-themed fall releases are now the name of the game at the domestic box office as audiences gear up for Halloween.
