Mikey Madison's "Weird" New Edgar Allan Poe Adaptation Gets Exciting Release Timeline & Story Update

Translate

Mikey Madison's new twist on a classic Edgar Allan Poe horror story is coming soon.

After joining a few popular franchises early in her film career, Best Actress Oscar winner Mikey Madison is finally returning to the horror genre. In 2019, Madison had a small role in the 2019 animated film The Addams Family, followed by a bigger breakout in Paramount's franchise slasher Scream (2022). Since then, Madison's projects have largely been critically acclaimed dramas, like Anora, before her next role transports her into the world of gothic storyteller Edgar Allan Poe with A24's The Masque of the Red Death.

Though The Masque of the Red Death began filming in February 2026, A24 has yet to set a release date or official premiere window for the upcoming horror adaptation. However, speaking to ScreenRant's Liam Crowley in an interview for her new movie The Social Reckoning, Madison confirmed that the plan is for The Masque of the Red Death to release in 2027. Madison didn't reveal the window within 2027 when the film is intended to debut, but the award-winning actor did tease more about her characters and unique tone of the Edgar Allan Poe movie:

ScreenRant: We're very excited that you're stepping into the world of Edgar Allan Poe in a future project, The Masque of the Red Death. Do you have any idea when we're going to get to see it? I understand you shot earlier this year.

Mikey Madison: I think next year, definitely. I'm so excited for people to see that. Again, it's something completely different than I've ever done before in terms of this medieval time period, and the tone is beyond anything I have ever read before. I don't even know if I quite understand it yet, but it's at times very slapstick and very dramatic and interesting and weird. I play two characters, and it was fun. It was really fun and crazy.

Rather than a more modern take on the classic tale, Madison confirms that The Masque of the Red Death will be set in medieval times, aligning with the ambiguous timeline of Poe's original 1842-published short story. This now marks the earliest-set period drama for Mikey Madison's movie and TV roles after she previously appeared in the 1960s-set film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and series Lady in the Lake.

Emphasizing the project's differences from her past roles, Madison describes the tone as "beyond anything [she has] ever read before," confirming the film is taking a more unconventional approach to Poe's gothic horror material. In addition to its gothic sentiment, the upcoming A24 horror movie will be combining slapstick humor with its dramatic storytelling in a fashion that Madison excitedly calls "fun," "crazy," and "weird."

The original Edgar Allan Poe story follows Prince Prospero as he attempts to avoid a plaque known as the "Red Death" by hiding in his castle alongside others in the aristocracy. The horror story has been adapted on numerous occasions since its first publication, which notably includes the Vincent Price-starring movie of the same name from 1964.

The Social Reckoning star also notes that she'll be playing two roles in The Masque of the Red Death, which will reportedly be long-lost twin sisters reunited amidst the chaos ensuing within the walls of the castle. However, more specific character details for Madison and the rest of the cast are still under wraps. In addition to Mikey Madison, the confirmed cast of The Masque of the Red Death includes Léa Seydoux, Franz Rogowski, and Benedict Wong.

The Masque of the Red Death is directed and written by Charlie Polinger, who also helmed the 2025 thriller The Plague.
