Lockheed Martin has unveiled PAC-3 Edge, a new interceptor designed to counter hypersonic and other advanced missile threats, as the US races to strengthen its missile defences and replenish stockpiles strained by ongoing conflicts. The new weapon aims to improve the Patriot missile defence system’s ability to engage difficult targets at longer ranges and higher altitudes.According to Reuters, PAC-3 Edge features a new seeker, upgraded flight controls and a multi-pulse rocket motor supplied by Northrop Grumman. These upgrades are intended to improve the interceptor’s ability to track and engage advanced aerial threats, including hypersonic weapons.Lockheed Martin expects the new interceptor to cost roughly the same as its existing Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE), the report said. The interceptor is being developed under the US Army’s competitive Future Interceptor programme, with Lockheed Martin targeting testing in 2027 and deployment in 2031. The programme reflects Washington’s push to develop defences capable of dealing with increasingly sophisticated missile threats.

Intercepting a hypersonic missileIntercepting hypersonic missiles is a major challenge for modern air defence systems. Travelling at more than Mach 5, these weapons can manoeuvre mid-flight, making their trajectories difficult to predict.PAC-3 Edge is designed to counter this challenge with an upgraded seeker to track targets, improved flight controls for manoeuvrability and a multi-pulse rocket motor to provide thrust at different stages of flight.Together, these features aim to improve the interceptor’s ability to engage fast-moving, manoeuvrable threats, though its effectiveness against hypersonic weapons remains to be established through testing. The development of PAC-3 Edge comes as the US seeks to expand interceptor production amid rising demand for air defence weapons. In July, the US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth up to $58.6 billion to ramp up production of its existing PAC-3 interceptors, Reuters reported. The company aims to increase annual production capacity from around 600 interceptors to 2,000, reflecting Washington’s push to replenish inventories while meeting the needs of its own forces and allies.
