Indonesia urges ASEAN cooperation on journalistic copyright protection

Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has called on ASEAN member states to strengthen cooperation and align efforts to build a more robust framework for protecting journalistic copyrights amid evolving challenges in the digital era.
Director General of Public Communication and Media at the ministry, Fifi Aleyda Yahya, made the remarks on Saturday at the ASEAN Forum on the Protection of Journalistic Works in the Copyright Regime in the Digital Era in Badung District, Bali Province.
She noted the rapid advancement of digital technology has expanded the reach of journalistic works while creating new challenges for copyright protection, underscoring the need for fairer mechanisms governing the use of journalistic content on digital platforms.
Such mechanisms are especially essential because journalistic works are the product of a rigorous professional process involving reporting, editing, and significant resource investment, she added.

Yahya further stressed the importance of enforcing regulations governing attribution, licensing, and compensation for the use of journalistic works on digital platforms and in the development of artificial intelligence models.
In this regard, she said cooperation among Southeast Asian countries is essential to strengthening copyright protection for journalistic works and fostering a more enabling environment for the media industry to survive and thrive in the digital era.
She also outlined Indonesia's approach to the issue, highlighting a 2024 presidential regulation that requires digital platform companies to support quality journalism.
The official emphasized that developing effective solutions for the use of journalistic works on digital platforms requires goodwill and collaboration among all relevant stakeholders and policymakers.
"Protecting copyright must respect creators and rights holders while upholding freedom of expression and serving the public interest," she remarked.
