Warning: SPOILERS for The Gilded Age Season 4, Episode 1 - "Ring The Bells"

Yes, that really was Matt Damon and David Letterman making a secret cameo in The Gilded Age season 4's premiere.

The Gilded Age returned for season 4 with major events happening to the upper-class denizens of East 61st Street. The Van Rhijn family had a wedding, the Buckinghams welcomed the birth of George (Morgan Spector) and Bertha Russell's (Carrie Coon) grandchild, while Agnes Van Rhijn prepares to host a dinner for President Grover Cleveland (Jim Gaffigan). Meanwhile, two famous faces crossed the street between the Russell and Van Rhijn homes.

Vulture revealed the inside story of how Matt Damon and David Letterman cameoed in The Gilded Age's season 4 premiere. The blink-and-you-miss-it moment happens 8 minutes and 33 seconds into the episode, as the movie star and talk show host walk across East 61st Street as 19th-century gentlemen. See the photo below:

Letterman has long wanted to become a background actor, according to Vulture, although Dave's previous attempts to appear in films like Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme and Michael B. Jordan's remake of The Thomas Crown Affair didn't pan out.

Isabel Richardson, showrunner for Netflix's My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, hatched an idea for Dave to do a cameo with Matt Damon, who began his career as a background actor with Ben Affleck. Since The Gilded Age films in New York, the plan was presented to creator Julian Fellowes and HBO CEO Casey Bloys.

Everyone thought the idea was "hysterical," and scheduling ultimately permitted Damon and Letterman to appear by walking across The Gilded Age's "hero street" in Old Bethpage on Long Island, where the set is located. Dave's hat is also notable as it's a custom-fitted bowler he had made in London while filming his Netflix show with Michael B. Jordan.

Many viewers simply may not have noticed Matt Damon and David Letterman, since Matt had a period-appropriate mustache, although Dave sported his now-signature long white beard. And, since they were making a cameo, Damon and Letterman appear uncredited in The Gilded Age season 4's premiere.

New episodes of The Gilded Age season 4 premiere Sundays @ 9pm ET on HBO and HBO Max.
