La Mesa Dam below overflow level, still above critical mark

MANILA, Philippines — The water level of La Mesa Dam in Quezon City has fallen below its overflow level but remains above the critical level, according to the state weather bureau on Sunday evening.

In its latest update issued at 6 p.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the dam’s water level stood at 80.11 meters as of 5 p.m., below the overflow elevation of 80.15 m but still above the critical level of 79.50 m.

The water level had slightly eased from 80.30 m recorded at 5 a.m. on Sunday.

Pagasa warned that excess floodwaters from the dam would flow directly into the Tullahan River, affecting low-lying areas in Quezon City (Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria, and San Bartolome), Caloocan City, Valenzuela City (North Expressway and La Huerta Subdivision), Malabon City, and Navotas City.

It added that light to moderate rains were still expected over the watershed area for the next 12 hours.

“All residents living in the aforementioned areas, especially those residing near the riverbanks, are still advised to take appropriate actions,” the weather bureau noted.

In its separate 5 p.m. weather forecast, Pagasa said Tropical Depression Pilandok was not forecast to make landfall in the country but would enhance the southwest monsoon, or habagat.

It added that monsoon rains were forecast over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, some parts of Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), and Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan). /mcm
