Tom Brady is not losing sleep over Patrick Mahomes. After the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7, their first defeat of the season, Brady said he expects Mahomes to answer in Week 8. Mahomes threw for just 165 yards on 19-of-33 passing, and the Chiefs never reached the end zone. Brady shared his view in his latest NFL power rankings. He pointed to Mahomes' leadership and the way the offense has played all year. Kansas City now travels to Denver on Sunday with AFC West standings on the line.
Tom Brady backs Mahomes to bounce back
The loss stung because of how sharp the Chiefs looked before it. Mahomes had piled up 1,309 passing yards and nine touchdowns through the first five games. Against Seattle, he managed 165. Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III rushed for a season-low 36 yards, and neither he nor Mahomes found the end zone. The Seahawks also own the league's top-ranked defense, so a hard day was always possible. Still, a game without a touchdown caught plenty of people off guard.
Brady is not one of them.
He said so in his power rankings. “After the way this offense has played all year, we can cut them all some slack,” Brady said of the Chiefs. “I have no doubt Pat is itching to get back out on the field in Denver and make things right. That's the kind of leader he is.”
Coming from a seven-time Super Bowl champion, that carries weight. Brady has sat through his share of bad Sundays.
What the Chiefs need against the Broncos
Brady also offered a fix. “Kickstart that offense early, give Pat some time to work receivers open, and yeah, I'll say it: Can we make some field goals, guys?”
The field goal jab is fair. When touchdowns are not coming, drives that stall in the red zone still need to end with points.
Pass protection is the other piece. Mahomes can only work through his reads if the line gives him a clean pocket, which is exactly what Brady is asking for.
The Chiefs visit the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday. The result will shift the AFC West standings, so Kansas City has little reason to ease into this one.
