Senators to have caucus on impeachment voting threshold

Following a consultation with amici curiae or friends of the court, the senator-judges will have a meeting regarding the voting threshold needed to either convict or acquit Vice President Sara Duterte in her impeachment trial.

In a Super Radyo dzBB report from Nimfa Ravelo on Thursday, Senate President Pro Tempore Vicente Sotto III said that they will have a caucus on the matter but is unsure when this will take place.

Meanwhile, Senate Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito said the caucus might take place on Monday, where they may reach a consensus.

Ejercito said his decision will be based on the opinions of the former chief justices and associate justice that served as the friends of the court.

The senator-judges had asked the former justices for their insights on whether the senators that are detained, on the run and those abroad should be included in the voting to impeach or acquit Duterte.

For Ejercito, it was important that senator-judges attended the proceedings so that they could render a fair decision, rather than relying on transcripts and recordings.

Senate impeachment presiding officer Francis Escudero had initially ruled that 16 votes were required to convict Duterte, which is two-thirds of the entire 24 senators.

However, Senator-judge Erwin Tulfo had asked to further discuss the matter, wanting to take the different views into consideration. — RSJ, GMA News
