RAF Fairford: AI-enhanced photos of suspects fuel false claims about their religion

Five men arrested over a suspected bomb plot at RAF Fairford have been released on bail as investigations continue. Meanwhile, AI-enhanced images purporting to show their faces have gone viral, with some users claiming it ‘proves’ the men are Muslim. SynthID confirms the sharpened images were created using OpenAI tools, meaning the AI has suggested different facial features. UK police have not disclosed any names or religion, only that the men are all British nationals. Vedika Bahl explains.

Five men arrested over a suspected bomb plot at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire have been released on bail as the investigation continues.

The arrests sparked a wave of speculation online, fuelled by images purporting to show the suspects’ faces at the time of their arrest. But the images circulating on social media have been enhanced using artificial intelligence.

The men, who were arrested on suspicion of terror offences, were photographed being apprehended near the base. The original image is grainy and blurry, with the men shirtless and handcuffed though no faces are clearly disce. Several social media users have since shared sharpened versions of the photograph, claiming the images reveal the men’s faces.

However, the sharpened, refined photo contains a SynthID watermark, indicating that the image was modified using OpenAI tools.

A second AI-enhanced image showing the men being detained has also circulated online. The two versions show noticeably different facial features, and lighting highlighting the limitations of using AI to enhance blurry photographs.

Despite this, the altered images have been widely shared. Two posts on X containing one of the images have amassed almost two million views, with some users falsely presenting it as evidence that the five men are Muslim.

In reality, there is currently no publicly available information about the suspects’ religion. Authorities have identified the five men as British nationals from London, aged between 23 and 25.

AI image-enhancement tools can generate details that are not present in the original image. Whilst internet users may have tried to refine the grainy image to see the men's faces more clearly, AI does not know what the original face looks like, leaving it to effectively guess or invent facial characteristics that do not actually exist.
