KUALA LUMPUR: A soldier arrested with a pistol and dozens of rounds of ammunition at an army camp in Sungai Besi on Sept 29 was charged at the Jalan Duta Courts on Thursday.

Cheras district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said the suspect was charged after investigation papers were submitted to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP).

"The suspect was charged at the Jalan Duta Courts, Kuala Lumpur, on Oct 8.

"The investigation papers were submitted to the DPP, who approved charges against the suspect under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960," he said in a statement today.

Rosdi said investigations are ongoing to identify the owner and source of the seized pistol and ammunition.

On Oct 3, it was reported that the soldier was arrested in a parking area inside the camp on Sept 29, with a pistol, dozens of rounds of ammunition, and liquid suspected to be ketum.

The suspect, in his 30s, has three prior criminal offences involving two drug-related cases and one other criminal case.

He was remanded for five days, with the remand period extended by another five days until Oct 8 to assist in investigations.
