New Home Affairs office officially opens in Cape Town – and you’ll need to book

Cape Town residents now have another option for accessing Home Affairs services, with a new modern office officially opened at the Cape Town Civic Centre.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber opened the new facility on Monday, 24 August, describing it as part of the department’s efforts to make services more accessible while reducing the long queues traditionally associated with Home Affairs offices.

“For too long, visiting Home Affairs has been associated with travelling long distances, standing in queues and losing hours of your day,” Schreiber said.

He said the department was working to change that experience through its reform agenda, including by bringing services closer to places people already visit.

New Home Affairs office will operate by appointment

The Civic Centre office has been designed as a modern and welcoming space and is located alongside existing City of Cape Town services.

It is also close to public transport options, making it more convenient for residents who need to visit Home Affairs.

Importantly, the office will operate on a bookings-only basis.

This means residents will need to make an appointment before visiting, with the system intended to allow clients to plan their visits and avoid spending hours waiting in queues.

Appointments can be made through the department’s upgraded online booking system.

The new approach forms part of the department’s broader Home Affairs @ home vision, which aims to decentralise services and make them available closer to where people live, work and carry out their daily activities.

More pressure taken off busy offices

The opening of the Civic Centre office is also expected to help ease pressure on existing Home Affairs facilities in Cape Town.

Schreiber said the new facility would take additional pressure off busy offices such as the one in Barrack Street.

The department has increasingly been turning to digital services and partnerships to reduce the need for people to visit traditional Home Affairs offices.

One of the biggest changes has been its partnership with the banking sector, which has expanded access to Home Affairs services at participating bank branches.

According to Schreiber, South Africans can already access Smart ID replacement services at more than 450 bank branches across the country, including dozens in Cape Town.
