NPP targeting Ablakwa for exposing wrongdoing under Akufo-Addo – Fifi Kwetey

Translate

NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of targeting Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for exposing alleged wrongdoing under its administration.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, November 3, he challenged the opposition party to produce evidence that the minister had stolen public funds.

Kwetey dismissed the campaign against Ablakwa as retaliation for his role in holding the NPP to account while it was in government.

“They come at you with every venom; they want to destroy at all costs.”

Asked whether Ablakwa was being targeted for his previous actions, he replied, “Of course, it's targeted.”

His comments followed the NPP youth wing’s demonstration in Accra over spending on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa. Protesters demanded the recovery of money they allege was unaccounted for.

The party has questioned an alleged GH¢16.4 million discrepancy involving the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians. It is demanding flight invoices, payment records, a full beneficiary list and an independent audit.

During the interview, the host raised concerns about signatures and alleged duplications in documents released by the ministries.

Kwetey dismissed those concerns as peripheral. He argued that Ablakwa’s previous disclosures involved evidence of alleged theft and abuse.

“He was providing evidence, hardcore evidence, of stealing that was going on, of abuse that was going on, providing authentic documentation.”

Kwetey also questioned complaints about payments raised months after recipients allegedly collected their money. He maintained that they should have reported any shortfall at the airport.

He accused the NPP of searching for a scandal without establishing theft.

“What have you been able to establish against the foreign Minister that is stolen? What? How much money? You can't prove one.”

Kwetey said his opposition to manufacturing scandals extended to his own party.

Recalling his time as the ranking member for Trade and Industry after the NDC’s 2016 election defeat, he said pressure to find scandals had contributed to his decision to leave the role.

“If there's something genuinely wrong, I will speak. I'm not going to be fishing for scandal for the sake of it.”

He warned that the NPP would struggle to recover politically if it continued on its current path.

“You're going to remain in this position for a long time unless you wake up and realise that Ghanaians have long passed this very low-level politicking.”
