President Prabowo orders new Finance Minister to protect State Budget

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Newly appointed Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara revealed that President Prabowo Subianto has directed him to safeguard the health and credibility of the State Budget to ensure long-term economic stability.

"The specific directive from the President is to safeguard state finances. This means maintaining their health and upholding their credibility," Suahasil told reporters following his swearing-in ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday.

He stressed that, as an integral component of state finances, the State Budget must remain sound to effectively fund and implement the government's national priority programs.

Beyond maintaining fiscal health condition, Suahasil emphasized the importance of preserving the budget's credibility to maintain public and market confidence.

"The State Budget must be capable of supporting the government's priority programs; therefore, it must be healthy. In addition to being healthy, it must also be credible. The State Budget must be trustworthy," he said.

Suahasil pledged to build on the foundation established at the Finance Ministry, balancing growth-oriented fiscal policies with sustainable debt and deficit management.

"Working alongside the Finance Ministry—which has already been working extremely hard—we will continue to manage state finances in a way that fosters growth and genuinely stabilizes the Indonesian economy," he said.

Expressing gratitude for his appointment, Suahasil underscored his commitment to fulfilling the mandate as the country navigates evolving global and domestic economic conditions.

"This represents a vote of confidence from the President and the Republic of Indonesia in me. I express my gratitude for this trust and hope to successfully fulfill the mandate entrusted to me," he said.

Suahasil was appointed finance minister, replacing Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, making him the third minister to lead the finance portfolio under President Prabowo Subianto's administration.

He previously served as deputy finance minister in the Red and White Cabinet beginning in October 2024, having also held the same position under former President Joko Widodo since 2019.

Born in Jakarta on November 23, 1970, Nazara is a prominent economist and professor at the University of Indonesia (UI).

He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from UI in 1994, a Master of Science from Cornell University in 1997, and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2003. He later entered government leadership as head of the Finance Ministry's Fiscal Policy Agency (BKF), serving from 2016 to 2019.
