‘Might as well disband you’: SC slams UP police for cover-up job

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Sanjeev Sachdeva asked why the state police should not be disbanded in view of its functioning.

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed Uttar Pradesh police for not naming the accused in a road accident case despite the complainant catching him on the spot and handing him over to police.

It said it would be better if investigations in all criminal cases were handed over to CBI if the state police worked with an agenda and did cover-up jobs.A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Sanjeev Sachdeva asked why the state police should not be disbanded in view of its functioning.“In everything you have an agenda. How will people trust you if this is how you proceed with matters? It is better if we ask the CBI to step in all UP police investigations.

We might as well disband UP police. This nonsense has to stop at some point,” the court said.

How will people trust police: SC

Supreme Court added that the affidavit filed by Shobhit Kumar, circle officer of Khurja in Bulandshahr, who was directed to give an explanation, was “utterly uninspiring”.“Toeing the line is one thing but bending over is another. And this kind of cover up job... less said the better,” SC said and summoned the officer to be present in court to give an explanation on his conduct.

“The said officer shall be present before court on next date to account for the same. It would be open to him to file a better affidavit explaining as to why FIR No. 195/2026 was filed on Aug 19 against an unknown motorcycle rider when it is the admitted fact that the said rider was apprehended at the spot. In paragraph 6 of aforestated affidavit, the name of the motorcycle rider is disclosed as Tushar s/o Prempal. The reason as to why the name was left blank in the FIR initially and was, thereafter, supplemented, requires to be explained,” the bench said in its order.

The bench sought an explanation on why an FIR was filed against unknown person in the case. “Why did you write unknown if the person was caught at the spot? Why did you register the FIR against an unknown motorcycle rider if he was caught on the spot? How will people trust the police?” the bench asked.
