New Red Dead Redemption 2 Expansion Is An Upgrade Worth Getting

There is one problem in the original Red Dead Redemption 2 that becomes harder to ignore the more you play it: there simply isn’t enough room for your horses. The complaint may sound a bit strange for a game that offers so many different experiences for you to explore, but anyone who has grown attached to having multiple horse companions will relate to me.
As of now, Red Dead Redemption 2 only lets you keep four horses in the stable, which means every new horse you add after the slots are filled comes with a decision. But a new mod called Stable Expansion finally gives players a way around that limitation, and it does so without changing how the game handles horses.
You Can Finally Keep More Horses In Red Dead Redemption 2
Available on Nexus Mods, Stable Expansion increases Red Dead Redemption 2’s original stable capacity from four horses to 19 slots by default, while giving players the option to push that number as high as 59 horses. More importantly, it doesn’t force you to learn a new system. Instead, the mod keeps everything inside the familiar stable menu, so buying, naming, saddling, storing, and selling horses works much like it always has.
A lot of Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay mods these days can feel like they have been bolted onto the game unnecessarily, but Stable Expansion takes a different approach. Instead of creating a new menu or adding a completely separate horse-storage system, it expands the one Rockstar already gave us. And honestly, we couldn't have asked for something better in this case.
Think about how many horses you can encounter during a normal playthrough of Red Dead Redemption 2. There are wild horses to find, unique horses tied to certain encounters, horses you can buy from stables, and whatnot. With only four stable spaces, collecting them becomes less about finding horses and more about deciding which ones you’re willing to lose.
With Stable Expansion installed, however, you can actually keep experimenting. The mod is also configurable. The default setup adds enough space for 19 horses, but the AdditionalSlots setting can be changed to provide anywhere from four to 59 total slots. Players who only want a little extra room don’t have to turn their stable into a horse warehouse.
There Is One Thing To Watch Out For In This Red Dead Redemption 2 Mod
The only catch? Stable Expansion is still a very new mod—the latest version went live on September 30. The creator has already made several changes aimed at fixing save-loading, performance, and stability problems, but recent posts on the mod page show that some players have still encountered issues when adding additional horses. So, I wouldn’t install it on a save file you care about without making a backup first. Other limitations to the Stable Expansion mode include the fact that it also requires Red Dead Redemption 2 version 1.0.1491.50, ScriptHookRDR2, and an ASI loader. Moreover, it’s intended for Story Mode, not Red Dead Online.
Still, if you’re playing Red Dead Redemption 2 again and have ever stared at the stable screen wishing you could keep just one more horse, this is an easy mod to understand. It doesn’t add a new story, weapons, or map but fixes something Rockstar never gave players enough freedom with in the first place.
