SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — Over 6,000 residents were forced to evacuate in several towns in this province as floodwaters rose amid persistent heavy rains.

Data from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office showed that 2,241 families or 6,399 residents are staying in evacuation centers across the province as of 10 p.m. Friday.

Botolan recorded the highest number of evacuees at 2,721, as rescue teams continued to assist residents in flood-hit communities.

Floodwaters rose in several areas as rivers and waterways swelled following sustained rains, prompting local authorities to deploy rescue teams to affected and hard-to-reach communities.

The flooding also further damaged flood-control structures that had already been affected by previous flooding.
