Palantir CEO Alex Karp wants US govt to take over OpenAI, Anthropic

Palantir CEO Alex Karp has taken a strong stand, urging the US government to step in and nationalise leading artificial intelligence (AI) research labs. He warned that failure to establish state control may result in a wave of private litigation against developers.

As per CNBC, Karp stated that authorities must set reasonable and practical guidelines around machine learning systems, emphasising that direct legal liability remains the primary safeguard against corporate negligence, arguing that developers should face both criminal charges and civil damages whenever irresponsible engineering leads to public harm.Karp was explicit about why he believes advanced AI companies may ultimately have to be taken over by the state: “The view that I believe they have is, these businesses have to be nationalized because if you don’t nationalize it every single one of my clients is going to sue.”

US government oppose some tech leaders’ demand

Karp’s demands arrive at a time when there is a debate among industry titans and the government officials regarding how to govern AI tools, sparked by warnings from computer scientists and researchers about the threat to humanity.Recently, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei demanded a slowdown in frontier model development. His stand gained swift backing from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as well as Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk. However, President Donald Trump aggressively rejected the warnings, posting multiple messages on social media dismissing AI dangers as a “hoax.”

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg have similarly challenged these narratives. Writing on X, Zuckerberg cautioned that research labs that fail to prioritise alignment will simply lose ground to competitors.

‘New’ operational failures and mounting legal scrutiny

Adding fuel to the debate, OpenAI revealed that it had recorded six separate instances of alarming or unexpected model operations over the last few months. Those disclosures arrive alongside the high-profile security compromise of developer hub Hugging Face, which reignited debate over whether safety checks are adequate.Addressing the flurry of software missteps, Karp insisted that the tech sector must get serious about operational safeguards.
