Govt targets 1 million household gas connections by 2028

Gresik, East Java (ANTARA) - The government is continuing to expand Indonesia’s household gas network, targeting the completion of one million connections by 2028 as part of efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency, Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurrachman said.

“It will be completed in 2028,” he said while inspecting preparations for the residential household gas network in Gresik District, East Java, on Friday.

Dudung said the network expansion is part of the national priority programs initiated by President Prabowo Subianto and included in the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan.

Throughout 2025 and 2026, he added, the government targets connecting 119,379 households across 15 districts and cities nationwide to the gas network. Of that number, 7,363 household connections will be built in Gresik and another 7,223 in Sidoarjo District, East Java.

He said the national initiative also aimed to reduce Indonesia’s reliance on imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and enhance energy accessibility in communities. Around 80 percent of the country's LPG needs are currently met through imports.

With that in mind, the official underscored the need for aligned efforts among ministries and agencies to ensure smooth processes, emphasizing optimal planning, preparations, and streamlined permit issuance.

For example, Dudung called on the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to immediately appoint a business entity as an operator and ensure the smooth issuance of natural gas trading permits.

He also called the upstream oil and gas regulator, SKK Migas, to arrange gas allocations and determine delivery points.

Addressing the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas), he stressed the importance of formulating affordable prices for household gas, ensuring they are not higher than those of subsidized 3kg LPG cylinders.
