Jembrana, Bali (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Trade Minister Budi Santoso traveled to the United States to attend the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting on Sept. 30–Oct. 1 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, aiming to advance Indonesia's trade priorities and support a rules-based multilateral system.

The meeting provides a strategic platform for G20 trade officials to discuss priority policies under the 2026 U.S. G20 Presidency.

"Indonesia's participation in the G20 meeting provides momentum to advocate national trade interests while supporting a fair, open, and rules-based multilateral system," Santoso said in Jembrana, Bali, on Tuesday.

Indonesia remains committed to ensuring all G20 trade initiatives fully comply with World Trade Organization rules, Santoso added.

Santoso will present Indonesia's position during four main ministerial sessions at the two-day meeting.

Discussions will focus on the weaponization of food through coercive trade measures, structural overcapacity, Most-Favored-Nation principles, and eliminating forced labor in global supply chains.

Agreements reached at G20 meetings help shape international trade guidelines that directly affect Indonesian export markets, according to the minister.

"Indonesia attends to ensure agreed commitments remain equitable, comply with WTO rules, and provide policy certainty for domestic exporters expanding globally," Santoso said.

On the sidelines, Santoso will meet Business 20 representatives under the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and hold bilateral talks with key trading partners.

He will also meet Indonesia's consul general in Chicago to discuss strategies for expanding export market access across the United States.

The 2026 U.S. G20 Presidency focuses on promoting economic growth, including through regulatory modernization, energy availability, and technical innovation.

The United States has convened Trade Working Group meetings since January 2026 to prepare the four main agendas for the ministerial summit.

The G20 comprises 19 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkiye, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The bloc also includes two regional members: the European Union and the African Union.

Collectively, G20 members account for about 85 percent of global gross domestic product, more than 75 percent of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world's population.

Indonesia previously held the G20 Presidency in 2022, hosting the Leaders' Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Nov. 15–16, 2022.
