Go on a 3-in-1 Hunt in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance
It's Tokyo Game Show (TGS) time and that means CAPCOM is demoing its latest iteration of the massively popular Monster Hunter franchise. But, for TGS 2026 it's more of an expansion with Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance. And while you might think there isn't much for an expansion, one of the new hunts demoed at the event has you doing a 3-in-1 battle with the new monster, Apha Araketa.
A 3-in-1 battle may not sound impressive as the Monster Hunter series has always featured hunts where you take on two monsters. However, in those cases it's either two different monsters (i.e. Rathian and Rathalos) or two of the same monsters (i.e. Rajang). But Apha Araketa is a whole different, and pardon the pun, beast. Rather than facing three Apha Araketa, the hunt is classified as one monster, but with three individual monsters working in tandem.
Of course there is the main Apha Araketa, signified by its brighter coloring and larger body, which is your main target. So, the hunt mainly focused on that individual monster. But that's not to say the hunt is easy as all three monsters work together to take out a hunter or party. This makes the hunt unique in that the monsters acted independently in previous hunts that feature two monsters, whereas in the Apha Araketa hunt the three monsters act as a unit.
These coordinated attacks may sound difficult to deal with at first, but in the end, it is about pattern recognition, timing, resource management, and in the case of a party, teamwork. Granted, it will take a few hunts to memorize the attack patterns and timing, but that's part of the fun of Monster Hunter games.
Despite being a lapsed Monster Hunter player, I'm very curious about Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance thanks to the TGS 2026 demo. Just the very idea of a 3-in-1 hunt is enticing and getting back into the game series is like riding a bike. As in, the core of the game between entries is similar enough to not relearn much. And for non-Monster Hunter fans, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is a great gateway into the modern franchise. Just make sure you have some friends to play with because, in my experience, it makes playing the game that much more fun.
